Regina Spektor, “Us”
Try as I might, I have never met anyone else who owned a copy of Regina Spektor’s first album, Soviet Kitsch, which I found last night as I packed away several hundred CDs. I’m sure that if I did meet another, we would also bond immediately over this song. Out of all of her material, this is my favorite. The piano is insistent, but never over the top; always allowing Spektor’s voice to do the heavy lifting. I love the little jump you hear at the end of the word “contagious.” I think she wrote this track with the idea that beyond the lyrical meaning, the song itself is also pretty contagious. Give it a listen, you’ll see what I mean.
