Voxtrot, “Blood Red Blood”

I just discovered that college actually gives me space to upload files! And I can then post them here! And you just download them down there without going to any stupid file-sharing site!

This is the best day ever!

Voxtrot delivers a song that reminds me of a Quentin Tarantino movie: the entire track is a buildup til the explosive ending. I absolutely love the wackiness of the horns right before the last chorus and the title-drop. A great piece about doing the best you can while you can. Yeah!

it leaves you like blood, red blood.

Bright Eyes, “First Day of My Life (TGIK remix)”

I never thought anyone could remix a Bright Eyes song. I don’t necessarily think this is fantastic, but it’s good enough for me. That little keyboard plunking along is just babyish enough to work!

this is the first day of my life, swear i was born right in the doorway

And if you don’t know, now you know~

Name: Brian

Tumblr name: FMchubs

Former tumblr name(s): I’ve only ever been FMchubs on all.

Currently listening to: Lil’ Wayne – “A Milli (DJDT remix)”

Favorite band: Girl Talk, I suppose.

Future career: Comedy writing and married to a woman who works in a zoo so sometimes I can help out there.

Plans for summer: Circus Camp unless I sell something for an exorbitant amount of money.

Most embarrassing moment: A couple of weeks ago I tried to walk past a guy on the sidewalk and I accidentally kicked a trashbag right into his path. He stumbled on it and just gave the biggest “are you fuckin’ serious?” look at me. I mumbled an apology but I was in a real hurry so I didn’t take off my headphones or shades and I powerwalked out of there. HUGE DOUCHE

An inside joke that that always makes you laugh: “Stenographer, read that back to me.”

How are you feeling? Energetic but worried about a grotesque amount of studying.

What are your plans for tomorrow? Bio exam and then bro night.

What’s your favourite saying/lyric/line? First one that came to my head: “I wish I wasn’t wearing this fucking shirt.” from Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

Formspring link? It’s been awhile since anyone hollered, but

Anything else? I basically take medicine for narcolepsy!

Hellogoodbye, “Shimmy Shimmy Quarter Turn (Take It Back to Square One)”

I have two versions of this song and I don’t know which one is more “official.” The one I’m posting sounds more demo-y to me, which is funny because it’s really so much better in such a great and subtle way.

The other version’s drums have none of the punch of the demo, and the vocals are pretty overproduced (to sound sexy? idk) compared to the nerdy yelps of this one. If you’re gonna have a faux-emo teenager song, you can’t try and age the dude’s voice- it doesn’t make sense! Besides, the demo ends with a sample from Mortal Kombat.

So here’s this one. The true one. The Highlander of this song.

gotta find out all the things like find out where she got her wings

Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, “Dirty Old Town”

A simply epic cover by Ted Leo of one of The Pogues’ most famous songs. Just as full of power and falsetto as some of his later work, like “Bleeding Powers” and “Me and Mia,” but here it’s just him and his guitar. What more can be said? The guy’s a pro.

I met my love by the gas works wall, dreamed a dream by the old canal

Ellie Goulding, “Under The Sheets (Baby Monster remix)”

As I listened to this lying facedown in my bed at 2pm trying to convince my body that staying awake is a good idea, I prayed that it wasn’t Uffie so that I wouldn’t have to admit enjoying a song by Uffie. Thankfully, there was no terrible rapping involved or boasts about popping glocks and such, just saccharine pop.

The vocals of Ms. Goulding are processed in just the right way, sounding more than a little j-pop influenced; made even more obvious when the song breaks wide open at about the halfway mark. The beat doesn’t overwhelm the track, just finally fills it in a bit more. However, my favorite part of the entire song is before all that happens, during the first verse. Baby Monster remixes this with just enough glitch sounds to make one think that there’s something sinister and powerful lurking under the surface. For some reason, it resonates with the lyrics and the tone of the song.

like all the boys before like all the
