Wrestling Isn’t Wrestling

In this short film, director/screenwriter Max Landis swedes the rise of Triple H as an argument I’ve heard a lot recently and grown to respect: TV wrestling isn’t meant to be a sport, it’s meant to be a story, and beyond that there are loads of other secret stories swirling around us– a creativity drawn up in ads, celebrity gossip, demographics, political stumping and more. I never watched wrestling growing up, but Landis’ own telling of the legend and his cartoonish filmic sensibilities fit his bombastic subject well. (That said, I wish I could grow to respect Max Landis’ beer-crackin’ mannerisms and goofy in-your-face broposture.)

there’s brilliant and then there’s brilliant and then there’s calling your wrestler “The Narcissist”

I forgot all about Doink, but it’s a testament to WWE’s marketing that I even know who he is at all considering I’ve never watched more than five minutes of a match in one sitting.

Hey, It’s 15 Years (And A Day) Since Mick Foley Got Thrown Off A Cage

It’s been a couple of months since I first read this and wanted to post it: captures some of the sweaty soap opera pulp & danger in pro wrestling. I can kinda understand watching. But no. Never. I can safely say I will never do that in my life.
